Student Advisors

Thanks to the following advisors for their invaluable help with this year-long project:

Friends of the Sea Otter (FSO)
Jim Curland, who has his Masters of Science in Marine Science, taught 33 fourth grade students about sea otter conservation. He also presented the students with FSO activity guides, pencils, stickers and bookmarks!

Monterey Bay Aquarium
Education specialist Jenny de la Hoz facilitated an exciting sea otter science lab for the students at the aquarium. Her specialty is marine biology related to crab embryology and deep sea natural history.

O'Neill Sea Odyssey
Amiee Keiser (marine biologist), Laura Barnes (naturalist) and Mike DeClement (sailing and navigation expert) took the students on the O'Neill Catamaran out onto Monterey Bay. There the students worked in rotating groups with the advisors collecting and viewing plankton, studying the kelp forest ecology, understanding navigation and gaining more awareness of the sea otter's diet and challenges in the wild.

Save Our Shores (SOS)
The Bilingual Program Coordinator for SOS, Gilberto Reyes offered a slide show about the wonders and issues of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, where the otters live. Using an actual watershed model, Mr. Reyes was able to demonstrate how land-based pollutants get washed by rain into the sea. And he helped organize a beach clean-up at the Santa Cruz Harbor.
