Red Rock Crab Essay

Red Rock Crabs are very fascinating crustaceans. A crustacean is (dictionary definition): an animal with a hard outer shell, that usually lives in water. Red Rock Crabs live under crevices in rocks. The rocks where they live are usually located in tides on the Pacific Ocean.

The way you can tell the difference between a male and a female is that on the abdomen, a female has a big round half oval like this:

and a male has an abdomen like this:

The reason why the female has such a round abdomen is for holding the eggs.

There are 4,500 different types of crabs in the world. Red Rock Crabs are just one of them. Their scientific name is cancer antennarius. The cancer magister also is called the dungeness crab. They are commercial crabs and are set out in stores for people to buy and eat.

Red Rock Crabs have black-tipped claws for protection and for ripping apart their food. They also have a red and white exoskeleton. They have little ridges on their shell for protection. The crab's shell is made of muscle, bone proteins hardened by calcium sugar/glucose.
